Anaphylaxis Treatment

What Is Anaphylaxis?
Anaphylaxis is an acute, severe allergic reaction that is potentially life threatening.  Up to 15% of the population could be considered “at risk” for anaphylaxis if they come in contact with a particular allergen.  The Center for Asthma & Allergy in Shirley, NY specializes in identifying the symptoms and triggers of an anaphylactic response.  The symptoms of anaphylaxis are severe but recognizable.

There are a few common symptoms of anaphylaxis.  If you or a loved one experiences tongue swelling, throat closing, or breathing difficulty, you could need anaphylaxis treatment.  Other symptoms of anaphylaxis include hives, cough, nausea, vomiting, drop in blood pressure leading to disorientation, slurred speech or fainting. Bee stings and food allergies can often trigger the symptoms of anaphylaxis, so anaphylaxis treatment should begin as quickly as possible after exposure to an allergen.

If you believe that you or a loved one is displaying the symptoms of anaphylaxis, seek immediate medical attention.  Anaphylaxis treatment commonly involves epinephrine, Benadryl, and/or steroids.  Any delay in anaphylaxis treatments can be serious.  Patients who are at-risk for anaphylaxis should talk with Dr. Atul Shah of The Center for Asthma & Allergy about developing an anaphylaxis treatment plan that works for them. Despite the severity of this particular allergic reaction, anaphylaxis treatments do help with the symptoms and restore normal breathing quickly. Our goal is to prevent any future anaphylaxis and also to prepare patients and their families to handle these medical emergencies.
